Hiring a Skilled Dog Walker in San Francisco
What to look for when hiring a dog walker in San Francisco, CA? If you spend time in any of San Francisco’s spectacular public parks, it’s readily apparent that a large proportion of our city’s residents are happy dog owners. In fact, San Francisco has the 7th highest per capita dog ownership in the country! Simply stated, seeing our beloved canine companions walking up and down our hilly streets and romping in our parks is a ubiquitous sight in the “City by the Bay”!
Nevertheless, as much as we love our dogs, we don’t always have the time to give our pets the long walks and attention they deserve. All of us have busy lives, juggling our careers, families, and homes. Given our hectic lives, many of us make the wise decision to “offload” some of our daily tasks to skilled professionals, including dog walkers. Similarly to identifying a skilled painter for home maintenance, or a skilled piano teacher for our child, it’s definitely well worth your time to choose your dog walker carefully. It’s my experience that choosing a competent and reliable dog walker can make a huge difference both in your dog’s life, but also in your own life. For my dog, I’ve learned that he is his “best self” after he’s had lots of exercise, quality play time with his “pack”, and clear, calm direction from his walker. However, for me, I look for competence, reliability, trustworthiness, and most of all, peace of mind!
So, here’s my guidance to other proud dog owners in this city, who want “best in class” care of their dog. First of all, in my opinion, it’s extremely important to learn and ask relevant questions about the company’s credentials. Make sure the company or individual you choose has had significant experience handling and/or training dogs, and always ask to speak with at least 3 existing clients of that company. San Francisco offers a plethora of dog walking services, and as is true for any service or product category, a wide range of quality standards exist in our city. Ideally, the founder or owners of your dog walking company should possess training experience, as every dog needs clear direction that he/she can really understand. In addition, since most city dogs are walked in groups, it’s critical that the founder/owner have ample experience directing dogs within a group dynamic.
When Hiring A Dog Walker Make Sure The Company Has Significant Experience Handling and/or Training Dogs.
Secondly, my family’s schedule is always hectic, so I’ve learned that reliability of service is non-negotiable. Therefore, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect that your dog walking service picks your dog up at roughly the same time every day and also returns them at the agreed upon time as well. Reliability for me also means that my dog receives a consistent amount of exercise and play on every walk, and for most dogs, a minimum walk of 60 minutes is mandatory. However, for younger and more active dogs, an outing of 90 minutes is ideal, to provide your pet with the physical and mental stimulation he/she needs. A recent innovation in the dog walking service area is equipping each dog with a GPS collar. This clever innovation allows me to know exactly when my dog’s walk begins, where he is, how long he is on his walk, and when it is wrapping up.
Hiring A Dog Walker That You Can Trust Is Pivotal.
Thirdly, when choosing a dog walking service, I’ve found that being able to really trust that company is pivotal. Since most of us view our dogs as true members of our family, I personally need to have 100% assurance that my dog gets the exercise, stimulation and attentive care that he needs. Equipping my dog with a GPS collar provides me with a lot of that trust. Of equal importance, though, is seeing how my dog behaves when he comes home. Personally, I’ve noticed that when my dog receives abundant exercise, great play time with compatible dogs in his group, and clear direction from the walker, he consistently comes home tired, calm, and content. Consistency in the quality of my dog’s walks and observing his calm, relaxed demeanor have been key ingredients to building my trust.
Amazingly, roughly 9 months ago, I was lucky enough to identify a dog walking service that is truly one of a kind. That service is called 360° Dog Walker and their credentials, quality of service, and reliability have all been stellar. Nancy Bernard, the founder, boasts both a B.S. in Animal Science, as well as years of dog training experience. 360° Dog Walker is truly distinct from the competition in that they guarantee a 60 or 90 minute walk, which they can confirm due to the use of the GPS collar innovation. In addition, 360° Dog Walker limits the size of each group to no more than 5 dogs, which are carefully pre-screened for compatibility. This allows Nancy and her team to take the dog groups to exclusive destinations such as Crissy Field, Presidio Park and many other beautiful outdoor venues. Finally, as the name 360° Dog Walker suggests, Nancy and her team make sure that all my dog’s needs are met, making sure that my dog returns home well-exercised, but also with a brushed coat and clipped nails.
In summary, I recommend that new or existing dog owners take the time to choose their dog walking service carefully. You’ll truly see the difference in your dog and also enjoy real peace of mind yourself!
